How to Choose the Best Washbasin for Your Bathroom

A bathroom is a place where you can relax in most homes. Relaxing sounds like the sound of running water are always good. This fact must be considered when designing a bathroom. The decor of the bathroom is a major consideration for most homeowners.

The bath elements such as the body sprays and showerheads get the most attention, but the washbasin is often neglected. It shouldn't be this way. As much as we look at our washbasins more than we do our baths, we all use them to wash our hands. The washbasin should be both functionally and aesthetically appealing.

You can choose from a variety of materials, including stone, ceramic, glass, or metal. You can also find them in various styles, such as wall-mounted, pedestal, or above counter.

Let's look at some options for choosing the right washbasin to fit your bathroom.

Top-mount Basin

This is the most popular washbasin. A top-mount basin is, as its name implies, designed to sit on top of the bench. The basin is located below the benchtop with the rim of it sitting on top of the benchtop. Depending on your style, the rim may be either very thin or quite chunky.

Because the cut-out is fully covered by the basin, top-mount basins can be used with any type of benchtop, including wood or laminate. Because they don't require polishing the cut-out edges like an under-mount basin, they are less expensive to install on a stone benchtop.

Basin under-mount

A benchtop-mounted basin sits beneath the benchtop. Instead of sitting on top, the sink's rim is attached to the benchtop's underside.

Under-mount washbasin

This design creates a seamless look and leaves a less visible basin. The benchtop can also be used to wipe water from the sink, which makes it an easy addition to family bathrooms. They are more expensive than top-mount basins.

Basin wall-mounted

An easy wall-mounted basin can be attached directly to the wall and does not require it to be sat in or placed on a tabletop. It is sleek and minimalistic, giving off a feeling of space.

Wall-mounted basins don't need cabinets beneath them, which makes the space feel larger. It is great for small bathrooms. To make a wall-mounted basin work in your bathroom, all plumbing must be inside the wall.

Pedestal Basin

A pedestal basin is an option if you prefer a wall-mounted basin but your waste pipe must go through the floor. The basin's pedestal is placed between the floor and the basin, hiding any pipes. If you are looking to create a classic feel in your bathroom, a pedestal basin will look great. There isn't much storage below the basin and they can be difficult to clean.

Vessel Basin

A vessel basin sits on top of the benchtop. However, some models can sit partly below it.

Contrary to most basins, which have only a few basins above the bench or none at all, vessel basins are very noticeable and can be a great way to make a statement in your bathroom. A vessel basin, as the name implies, is essentially a large bowl. They are great if you want a deep basin that can hold a lot of water.

The positioning of the bowl must be planned carefully to ensure that it is not too high or uncomfortable. It can be difficult to clean, particularly the lower half.

Semi-recessed basin

Semi-recessed basins are a great option if you have a small bathroom but still need storage. Semi-recessed basins are proudly displayed at the front of cabinets. The benchtop sits on allows for much deeper cabinets depending on which basin you choose. This saves valuable floor space. This also makes it possible to use a lot more of the bench space for cosmetics and other products. They are similar to a pedestal basin and can be used by young children or people with limited mobility. You can reach the tap closer to the basin without having to use a benchtop or cabinets. There is the possibility of splashes extending onto the floor, especially if there are children.

When choosing the right washbasin, consider the space and plumbing requirements of your bathroom. Also, measure the dimensions of the washbasin. This will save you time and avoid unnecessary headaches down the road.
